Rockwool
Rock wool
for horticultural use was invented in Denmark by Grodan in 1969.
The product is today used extensivelyin hydroponics systems
world wide. In North America the majority of greenhouse vegetables
are grown in Grodan. Stonewool absorbs moisture without holding
nutrients, and even when it is completely saturated still retains
20% air for your plants root system.
Stonewool
products are made from basalt rocks and chalk, which come from
the Earth. Mimicking Mother Nature’s production of "angel hair"
during volcanic activity, the Grodan stonewool manufacturer
heats rocks to 1600°C, to create lava. The lava is blown into
a spinning chamber, which makes fibers similar to cotton candy.
The fibers are packed into mats, from which Grodan cubes, blocks
and slabs are cut. Small tufts of fibers are also produced and
bagged as "rockwool granulate". The products make excellent
use of natural resources: one cubic yard of rock becomes 37
cubic feet of wool!
Rockwool
Pads
Rockwool
pads are pre-formed cubes of rockwool connected to form a pad.
You can cut individual cubes or strips of cubes for use in conventional
or hydroponic gardening methods. Great for rooting seedlings
or or clones.
Individually
Wrapped Rockwool
Cubes
These individually wrapped cubes are ideal for use in hydroponic
systems. You can write on the plastic wrapping, allowing for
easier identification of plants. The 1 1/2" cubes are perfect
for starting seeds or cuttings, while the larger cubes can be
used to grow plants to maturity. Rockwool cubes can also be
placed onto rockwool slabs for larger palntings.
Rockwool
Slabs
Rockwool slabs are designed to be used with rockwool cubes.
Place cubes on top of slabs to grow larger plants such as tomatoes
or peppers to maturity.
Rockwool
Granulate
Rockwool granulate is a loose form of rockwool that looks like
cotton candy. Rockwool granulate can be used in a variety of
ways and is used in several of the hydroponic systems that we
sell. Available in 25kg bags only.
