Home > F.A.Q. - Support > Hydroponic system made from an aquarium

Using an aquarium as a hydroponics system is easy. Just follow this quick guide.

1) Clean out aquarium thoroughly.

2) Make aquarium light proof. You can do this by taping black plastic to the outside of the aquarium. This is done to protect the root system of your plants from light.

3)Using a piece of plastic, Styrofoam, Plexiglas etc. Make a lid for the aquarium for the plants to sit on/in. Cut holes in the lid slightly smaller than the top of the pots that you are using, so that the pots will be supported inside of the holes in the lid.

4) Fill aquarium with nutrient and turn on the air pumps. Use at least one air pump, if you can use more than one, do so. Keep the air pumps running 24/7.

5) Place the lid that you have made on top of the aquarium, than place the plant pots, with plants in them, into the holes in the lid that you have cut for the plant pots. The plant pots should extend down into the nutrient solution a small amount. We recommend using either LECA or a 50/50 mix of perlite and vermiculite as a growing medium.

6) Check nutrient tds and pH on a regular basis, change nutrient solution at least once every two weeks. I hope this helps out, if anyone sees anything I missed, please let me know by posting to the forum.
