There is nothing more frustrating than walking into the kitchen in the morning only to find that there has been an invasion of ants into your home. Ants are one of life’s biggest pests and getting rid of them can be very stressful. Many pesticides are not very effective in getting rid of them and finding a natural solution to get rid of these ants can be quite daunting. Here are some ways to kill ants without pesticides.
Try White Vinegar in Water
Vinegar is really effective against ants and you can simply make a cheap pesticide by just using a vinegar and water solution. To do this, mix vinegar and water of equal parts in a spray bottle. Spray this mixture directly onto the ants so as kill them, a damp towel can be used to wipe up the ants. Spray it around your window sills, doorways, and other places where you see ants coming inside. It has been found that using the vinegar solution to clean countertops, windows and floors reduce the likelihood of ants crawling over these surfaces. White vinegar is an excellent cleaner and it doesn’t smell when it is dried.
Spray Sprinkle Diatomaceous Earth Inside the House
Food grade diatomaceous earth is a very effective insecticide and it doesn’t cause any harm to humans or pets. It is made from fossilized diatoms that have been ground into a powdery form; when insects walk over the powder the tiny fossil shards scratch the waxy outer coating on their outer body causing them to dry out. Sprinkle the powder along your baseboards, window, sills, and around the perimeter of your house to kill ants. An applicator or a dusting bulb can be used to do this. When handling diatomaceous earth, it is a good idea to wear a mask or cloth over your face. The powder is not really harmful but when ingested the tiny particles can be hard on your lungs. Diatomaceous earth becomes ineffective when it gets wet or the air is damp, it becomes effective again when dry, so if your home’s humidity is reducing the potency consider using a dehumidifier in the problem area.
Dish Soap and Water
Fill a bottle with two parts water and one part dish soap; mix this solution by shaking the bottle thoroughly. To get rid of ants spray this mixture over them, this will suffocate them almost immediately. Wipe them up with a wet cloth and keep the bottle around in case they come around again. Another good way to get rid of ants without using pesticides is to set out shallow soapy water; you can lure them with something sugary. This method works well when you want to kill groups of ants, this might not kill the entire nest you need to address the source of the problem if they keep coming back.
Pesticides are harmful to humans, pets, and other creatures; there are a lot of ways to get rid of ants without using pesticides. The good news is that most of these natural remedies can be made at home.
